Senator Lankford Secures Change To DHS Religious Freedom Language

Senator James Lankford (R-OK) has applauded the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) decision to change its documentation to accurately reflect America’s First Amendment right of freedom of ‘religion’, and not just freedom of ‘worship’. Last year, Lankford urged the Department to make this change. Last Thursday, DHS issued a notice to the public that they are currently in the process of updating all relevant internal and external publications, including test study materials, to reflect this ‘freedom of religion’ change in terminology.

Senator James Lankford (R-OK) urged the Department of Homeland Security to change all United States Citizenship and Immigration Services naturalization and citizenship materials to reflect our First Amendment right of the free exercise of religion, instead of simply the “freedom of worship.” Currently, the naturalization test civics questions only reflect “freedom of worship.”

Senators James Lankford (R-OK) and Ted Cruz (R-TX) today introduced two resolutions to overturn recently enacted D.C. Council legislation that undermines religious freedom. In January, the District enacted the Reproductive Health Non-Discrimination Amendment Act of 2014, which could require employers to provide health plans that cover abortion services, and the Human Rights Amendment Act of 2014, which would force religious schools to support activities that violate the tenets of their faith.
