Converts from Islam in Malaysia Detained in ‘Faith Purification Centers’

Converts to non-Islamic faiths in Malaysia can be detained for more than three months in “Faith Purification Centers.” While some converts are arbitrarily arrested and sent to the centers, detention in one of the three camps is “slowly gaining preference among sharia judges in Malaysia” as an alternative to prison sentencing, Mohd Al Adib Samuri of the National University of Malaysia wrote in 2013.

Case in Malaysia Could Decide If Sharia Supersedes Constitution

A case involving the constitutional position of sharia (Islamic law) courts in the Malaysian legal system could strengthen the power of the courts to block Malay conversions from Islam. In the potentially landmark case, due to be heard on Thursday (Aug. 13), the Federal Territory Islamic Council claims that sharia courts are separate from and not subject to Malaysia’s federal court system.

Raid on Bible Society of Malaysia

Aided by police, the Selangor Islamic Affairs Department (JAIS) on Jan. 2 raided Bible Society of Malaysia offices in Damansara Kim, near Kuala Lumpur, without a search warrant. During the raid, JAIS confiscated 330 Bibles – 320 copies of the Malay Bible and 10 copies in Iban, an indigenous language.
