Fearful Egypt Copts mark Christmas after church bombing

It is Christmas Eve for Egypt’s Copts but Marie Labib is not in a festive mood, with dark thoughts haunting her weeks after a church bombing killed 28 members of her community. Copts, who make up about one tenth of Egypt’s population of more than 92 million and who celebrate Christmas on Saturday, have long complained of discrimination.

The Bible Society of Egypt has reopened a Christian bookstore in Upper Egypt that was destroyed last year by Muslim Brotherhood sympathizers. The reopening of the bookshop in a main street in downtown Assuit is a symbol of the continuation of Christian presence in Egypt

Egypt’s government and religious leaders have condemned an attack outside a Coptic church in Egypt’s capital Cairo that killed four people, including an 8-year-old girl. The condemnation came just hours after gunmen shot dead two adults and two girls, aged eight and 12, following a church wedding, state media reported.
