Democratic Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard made an unannounced trip to Syria two months after she met with President-elect Donald Trump to discuss foreign policy.

Gabbard, a major in the Army National Guard and a representative for the 2nd District of Hawaii frequently challenged Obama on national security issues. When she sat down with Trump, Gabbard warned him about escalating the civil war in Syria by establishing a “no-fly zone” to protect civilians from bombings. She believes the creation of this safe zone could bring the U.S. into direct conflict with Russia and result in nuclear war.

Spokewoman Emily Latimer said Gabbard “has long been committed to peace and ending counterproductive, interventionist wars.”

In a statement, Latimer said: “As a member of the Armed Services and Foreign Affairs Committees, and as an individual committed to doing all she can to promote and work for peace, she felt it was important to meet with a number of individuals and groups including religious leaders, humanitarian workers, refugees and government and community leaders.”

When Gabbard and Trump met back in November, Gabbard said they discussed legislation she is pushing that would end “our country’s illegal war to overthrow the Syrian government.” The two discussed Syria, defeating the Islamic State and al-Qaida and other foreign policy issues.
