The law, which is to be considered by the German parliament in the next few weeks, could result in the arm

y holding 20,000 additional security checks every year, according to a report from German publisher Funke Mediengruppe.

Under current legislation, surety checks on recruits only occur after they have been taken on by the Bundeswehr, the German military.

The proposed law refers to incidents where Islamic terrorists in other countries, such as Middle Eastern countries, have urged members of the military to attack their own colleagues or allied armed forces.

A spokesperson for the military counterespionage service said there have been 60 additional potential cases in the German military under investigation for suspected links to Islamist militants.

According to DW, the spokesperson “said recruiting offices had received an undisclosed number of queries from people wanting to join the military for just a few months to undergo intensive weapons and equipment training.”

These investigations led to concerns that radical Islamic groups are trying to gain military training for their supporters by having them join the German military and therefore abusing training and opportunities offered by the army.

DW reports that “German security services are on high alert after two Islamist militant attacks this summer. The arrival of some 900,000 migrants last year, many of them from the Middle East, has also fueled fears that Islamist extremists might have entered the country as pretend asylum-seekers.”
