In this morning’s edition of The Washington Times¸ you will find an article about female genital mutilation being on the rise in the United States. The article quotes The Government Accountability Office in stating that the Obama administration’s estimate of 513,000 females in the United States are at risk of genital mutilation, a threefold increase from 1990.

The article continues to discuss that the increase in female genital mutilation in the US is due in part from the increase of immigrants coming to America from Africa and the Middle East, but leaves out the impact of Islam on the process.

It comes three months after a story published by ABC News about the topic, which also left out the influence of Islam on this practice.

Marit Tolo Østebø, a lecturer on global sexuality and religion at the University of Florida, said “There are different positions within Islam on the issue… So you would have some Islamic scholars who will say, and might use parts from the hadith, to support that it’s good to do some cutting, but they will often emphasize that it is not an obligation.”

Seven of the top eight countries in Africa with high female genital mutilation rates have a majority Muslim population.

The Daily Wire wrote a report about ABC News’ displaying cowardice in refusing to report on the religious influences on the horrid practice. These comments just as easily apply to this morning’s article in The Washington Post: “Well, then. It’s quite obvious which countries these “female immigrants” hail from, which “homelands” are guilty of the practice, which religion promotes this violence against children. The fact that ABC deliberately chose to omit these important, and dare we say, newsworthy variables is an affront to honest journalism. ABC placed its politically correct agenda above reporting the facts. The report ABC published on FGM was a shameful display of cowardice and a slap in the face to the victims of Islamic brutality.”
