On Tuesday, August 23, Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Antioch and All East John X Yazigi, Melkite Greek Catholic Patriarch of Antioch and All the East Gregorios III Laham, and Syriac Orthodox Patriarch of Antioch and All East Mar Ignatius Aphrem II delivered an appeal requesting the world to life the siege and sanctions imposed on Syrian people.Syrian Patriarchs

The Patriarchs said if the goals for imposing the sanctions have a political aim, they are negatively affecting the Syrian people because their daily lives are being interrupted by their inability to buy food and receive medical services. In the appeal, they discussed the deteriorating social conditions of the Syrian people and pointed out that all of this has led to an increase in poverty and suffering.

The Patriarchs pointed out that through this appeal, they were speaking on behalf of numerous humanitarian organizations, states and others who want to help the Syrian people and believe the best way to do so is by lifting the sanctions “that constitute another aspect of the crisis and seek to pressure individuals, establishments, and companies, thereby pressuring the entire population.”

They stressed that the lack of new investments, blockade of international flights to Syria, reduction of exports, blacklisted companies, closing of most Western embassies in the country and the prevention of banking transactions with Syria are isolating the country from the global community.
