Wasil Farooqui was arrested on Saturday Aug. 20, for allegedly trying to behead two people.

The FBI launched a federal terrorism investigation as a result of a stabbing that took place this weekend in Roanoke, Virginia. The FBI is looking into whether the attacker attempted to behead his victims in an ISIS-inspired attack.

ABC News reports that 20-year-old Wasil Farooqui, the alleged attacker, has been on an FBI watch list after traveling to Turkey to sneak into Syria in hopes of joining the Islamic State.

On Saturday, August 20, 2016, Roanoke County Police arrested Farooqui on charges of assault with malicious wounding after he allegedly injured a man and a woman while yelling “Allahu akbar” while he attacked them with a knife. He is currently being held without bond at the Western Virginia Regional Jail.

According to authorities, Farooqui may have been trying to behead the man, a form of killing very common among the Islamic State and its followers. Farooqui and his victims were hospitalized for their injuries.

Nazarene_Pin_Ad_300pxCBS News reports: “The FBI is working with the police department following the incident that occurred on Saturday evening,” Adam Lee, the head of the FBI’s Richmond field office and the special agent in charge, said in a statement. “While I cannot discuss details of the investigation at this time, I do want to reassure the community that we are working to determine the nature of the incident.”

Farooqui’s next court appearance is on September 1 where it will be determined whether or not he needs a state-appointed attorney.
