In the midst of Turley’s failed coup, Christians in the country were targets of violence. In Matalya, a city located in Anatolia, Turkey, SunniTurkeyIslam Muslims targeted a Protestant church, which was a “small, modern shopfront nestled in the city’s minority Alevi district” because Protestants are prohibited from building churches in Turkey. Gangs of Sunni Muslim shouted “Allahu akbar” while smashing the glass on the shopfront of the church, which has to be called an “association” in accordance with the country’s laws.

Pastor Tim Stone said “the attack on the church was light. But it’s significant that it was the only shopfront attacked in those three days. We were the only targets.”

About 8 hours away from Matalya, in the city of Trabzon, a mob attacked the Santa Maria church, smashing windows and plowing down the door with a hammer. Violence is not new to Christians in this area. The population of Christians in Turkey dropped from 2 million to barely 120,000. An Iranian man told the Daily Express, “Turkey is like Iran in 1975. I’m sure we will see it become an Islamic Republic very soon.”
