candycaneThe University of Maine recently got unwanted attention for issuing an edict that banned all decorations that might be considered religious – including candy canes, Christmas trees, wreaths, and Christmas presents.

After 600 people started a Facebook group, “Bring Cheer Back To UMaine,” the university issued a “clarification” that it was all a misunderstanding.

One student had complained about the Christian symbolism of the decorations and the Executive Director of Auxiliary Services Daniel Stirrup sent out the edict banning all traditional Christmas decorations – referring to them only as “Xmas” decorations.

The university now says “We’re not the Grinches of Maine. It was a big misunderstanding.”

CBN has a video that describes the religious significance of the candy cane in European and American history: CBN TV – The Candy Cane.
