Indian Christians are facing new persecution by Hindu fanatics.

Four Christian women were arrested in the Indian state of Karnataka after visiting the home of a non-Christian family. Shirley, Mini, Leelamma and Shubha were falsely accused by residents of Pulittadi village of forcing the family to convert by “laying siege to the house”.

A local official also reported to the authorities that he had seen the women distributing Christian leaflets in an attempt to convert people. After they were taken into custody on 12 August, the women were questioned for two hours before being released.

According to the President of the Global Council of Indian Christians, Sajan George, the arrests are “a matter of serious concern, because not only did they target innocent faithful, but are likely to tear the fabric of society. The Hindu nationalist forces want to spread a feeling of suspicion towards Christians.”

Although Christian activities are not officially restricted in Karnataka, “anti-conversion laws” are active in five other states. These prohibit conversions by “force, fraud or allurement” but can be misused to prevent legitimate Christian evangelism.

The Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which took power in May, promised to introduce national legislation to curb “missionary” activity.

This incident follows recent attempts by an extremist Hindu organisation, Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), to eject Christians from their homes in the Bastar district of Chhattisgarh state. Local media also reported last month that 50 villages in Bastar and Jagdalpur had approved a resolution denying Christian leaders access to their villages.
