The Law Society in the UK (similar to the American Bar Association) has recently decided to provide legal guidance for lawyers in drawing up “Sharia-compliant” wills for Muslim clients.

The promotion of Sharia by the Law Society has Members of Parliament up in arms about the extent of Sharia law in Britain.

The guidelines for Sharia-compliant wills includes denying women an equal share in the inheritance and exclude “illegitimate” children or infidels. Adopted children would also be denied an inheritance.

Members of Parliament are now calling for an investigation into how widely Sharia is used in Britain. One MP, Barry Sheerman stated: “We need a serious look at this through the select committee system. I think it would be harmful to make it a party-political issue. This should be dragged out into the open and be discussed.”

According to a spokesman for the Ministry of Justice: “Sharia law has no jurisdiction in England and Wales and the Government has no intention of changing this position.”

Baroness Cox, who campaigns against religious discrimination, is outraged over the promotion of Sharia by The Law Society. She noted: “This violates everything we stand for. It would make the Suffragettes turn in their graves.”

“No longer do we have a single legal code in our society. Instead, alongside our own law, there is now effectively a parallel quasi-legal system operating within some Muslim communities.

“Sharia law, imported from theocracies like Afghanistan and Saudi Arabia, first began to be used here in a strictly limited form, dealing mainly with narrow issues like Islamic financial contracts.

“But as the Muslim population has grown and the pervasive creed of multiculturalism has become ever more powerful, so Sharia law has rapidly grown in influence within some communities.

“There are now estimated to be no fewer than 85 Sharia courts across the country — from London and Manchester to Bradford and Nuneaton. They operate mainly from mosques, settling financial and family disputes according to religious principles.”
