For western lay people, it can be hard to distinguish one radical Muslim from another. What is the difference between Salafis and the Muslim Brotherhood? Are they really all that different? And why do Western governments seem to favour and even partner with Brotherhood-backed groups, but denigrate Salafis?

In his May 21, 2013 column, Mashari Al-Zaydi, columnist for the London-based Saudi daily Al-Sharq Al-Awsat, harshly criticized President Barack Obama and his foreign policy, particularly as it relates to the crisis in Syria.
Al-Zaydi wrote that Obama’s handling of the Syrian crisis had proven his failure as president, showing him as completely lacking in leadership ability, hesitant and diffident, and overall the weakest president in the history of the United States

The AP’s retreat is indicative of a crumbling of parts of the so-called “mainstream media” in its reporting about the Middle East, the Arab world and the Muslim world. By retreating from describing the Islamists as Islamists, the AP isolates itself from the rest of international media, which uses the term “Islamist” naturally and consistently with its Arabic translation and meaning.

Turkey was a secular nation, however, the Western democracies decried the fact that now all political parties were allowed to participate in government. Turkey, just as Tunisia, Egypt, Iraq and Syria prohibited religious parties. Once the Muslim Brotherhood’s political wing was allowed to participate in elections the window of democracy became wider, but the window of freedom became smaller as the nations schools and other institutions became Islamist is nature
